Excellence in a military display is measured by the trust an operator can place in the unit under the most difficult conditions.

To meet this challenge on the modern battlefield, Lexel manufactures a line of robust, highly reliable CRT-based displays.  They provide IR, visible light and radar images of superior quality for severe environments present within armored vehicles and attack helicopters.

The heart of the Lexel display is a miniature, ruggedized, high resolution CRT, available in one of 3 sizes, 1 inch, 1.5 inches or 2 inches.  Manufactured by Lexel, these CRTs are specifically designed for demanding military applications and provide the user with an apparent Field of View (FOV) ranging from 16 to 40 degrees.

Lexel manufactures these CRTs with a high performance bipotential electron gun, a fine grain cataphoretically coated phosphor screen and encapsulated tube.  Lexel’s designs are free of vibration microphonics and effects of external magnetic fields.

Lexel displays are available as a stand-alone unit or in modular form.  The stand-alone unit consists of the drive electronics, the CRT assembly sealed within an aluminum housing and a viewing biocular.  Our modular form consists of electronic circuit boards and a CRT assembly ready for installation into a customer’s system enclosure.  Both can be purchased as either RS-170 or CCIR versions for applications worldwide.  Lexel can also provide non-standard scan versions when required.

With our ability to design and manufacture both the CRT and the complete display in the same facility, Lexel can offer an unparalleled capability to create custom designs to fit the requirements of any system specification.

 

DISPLAY APPLICATIONS

Wheeled Vehicles
  A new generation of wheeled vehicles is being equipped with anti-tank missiles using thermal sights.  Lexel is participating in the effort by developing displays that not only present high-resolution IR images but also provide high brightness alphanumeric overlays for direct optical sighting.

 

Battle Tanks
  Thermal imagers are well established on the world’s main battle tanks.  A recent trend, to which Lexel has contributed, has been the introduction of thermal systems to armored personnel carriers.  Uses include independent viewers for vehicle commanders and high-resolution sights for forward observation and air defense applications.

 

Attack Helicopters
  In addition to ground-based applications, Lexel displays are in place for use on the battlefield in the missile sighting systems of attack helicopters.  Lexel displays are designed to handle the airborne as well as the ground mobile military environment.
 

BIOCULAR CRT DISPLAYS AND CATHODE RAY TUBES

Lexel Imaging Systems is a supplier of CRT-based displays (monitors) for severe environments present within armored vehicles and attack helicopters.  Robust and reliable, these high-performance Biocular CRT displays provide infrared, visible light and radar images of superior quality.

The heart of the Lexel display are the miniature, ruggedized and high resolution CRTs available in various sizes ranging from 1 to 2 inches.  Manufactured by Lexel, these CRTs are specifically designed for demanding military applications.

The displays are available as stand-alone biocular display units or modular component sets.  The stand-alone unit is hermetically sealed, consisting of a viewing biocular, the drive electronics and the CRT assembly.  The modular unit consists of one or more electronic Circuit Card Assemblies (CCA), High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS) and CRT.  Display types may be purchased and configured for either RS-170 or CCIR TV standards.  Lexel can also provide displays with nonstandard video scan formats.

Example of a modular component set:

The NY10795 with its 2.0-inch CRT, Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) and High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS) - provides a high-resolution display configuration for cost effective integration into a thermal imaging system.   The compact CCA is a result of using designs with Surface Mount Technology (SMT) components.  Additional components can be supplied to provide DC-to-DC power conversion and power line filtering.

Examples of two stand-alone displays:

NY10244

The NY10244 with its 2" CRT offers the largest field of view, 40 degrees horizontal, of any Lexel display.  It operates from vehicle power in accordance with MIL-STD-1275.  Options include switched aspect ratio of 3 x 4 and 1 x 2, each individually optimized for TV and FLIR images.  Optional multifunction switches on the face of the unit may be used to control the display, or operate other system functions through a digital serial link.

 

NY10187 and NY10188
  Both displays use identical bioculars and environmental housings.  However, the NY10187 with its 1" CRT has a horizontal field of view of 16 degrees, while the NY10188 with its larger format, 1.5" CRT, covers 19 degrees.  Since both CRTs have a comparable spot size, the NY10188 is capable of resolving 20% more pixels across the image - a characteristic that is valuable in those applications requiring higher acuity.
